Q1). What research have you done (or could you do) that can be called primary research?
(primary source-original materials, on which other research is based.)
In unit 2: media audiences : I've written up a questionnaire which I'd given out to people's to get their first-hand views on music video and what they'll like to their preference in what the video content should contain. This was done for unit 7: media production. The questionnaire includes 20 multiple-choice questions, including: the types of music videos they prefer being live-action, As-live, stop-motion animation, black and white videos for more sophisticated effects etc.., the essential questions of course including: age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, others such as occupation, incomes, housing associations, brand preferences, recent holiday destinations. The following questions up from this was about the actual questions on the "ideal" music video of the persona's choice. whether it being on wanting the editing to be made as "professional" as possible or a video made of a more "home-made" video quality- it was vital to ask these questions to know exaclty what to include in our video, and the types of editing styles we may have to consider.
2). vox pox: were also a form of primary research for the music production unit as it required first-hand opinions, of our target audiences. Vox pox are effective ways in which you get a quick answer as its putting upfront and putting the person on the spot. As individuals or in pairs we'd go around and ask people the same simple question such as e.g "Do you like the song Pink-so what? If yes what do you like about it", or something like "What music genre catergory would the type of music you like and listen to fall in?". Its effective and conducts research effectively. And it has an advance over questionnaires which is the person may not answer the questions properly, not tell the truth or rather give an exact honest opinion, or simple just throw away the questionnaire.
3). we've created pie-charts as results in showing statistics on the percentage of positive answers reviewing from the questionnaire. (simple pie-charts was created using powerpoint). this contributed towards unit 2: media audiences.
Q2). What research have you done (or could do) that can be called secondary research?
(secondary source-analysis of primary source.)
1). when researching music video production companies, radio comapanies, and television/music television companies it was required to do some research on the internet about how its operated- the different jobs it accuires to run a production such as director, vice-director, (for music videos) artist, song-writers, producers, camrea men, script-writers, etc.. We also looked at what are "selling points", the money "budget'', ideas and contents, time, people involved, and record labels, and the actual production.
2). we used the resource centre looking at text books and articles on music video productions in order to be able to find out more information on music companies in the past, history of music videos and how the production and record label companies have developed since its starting era. we three diffrent articles on stop-motion animation, live-action, and As-live which included a detailed description, images, advantages and disadvantages of all three types of music videos. and at the end came to a decision on which we thought was challenging-yet do-able, creative and thought would work the best.
3). we had also looked at music videos and took intensive notes on its actual content.
Q3). What research have you done (or could do) that can be called Tertiary research?
(Tertiary Research-includes indexes and abstracts which serve to locate secondary and primary sources.)
1). we had used Tertiary Research in the resource centre as well- when looking at the books based on music, history of music, and the early works of music production companies to its latest era. which consisted upon us looking at indexes which provided a citation which fully identifies the work: author, title of the book, publisher and the date of publication which we noted down.
Q4). What research have you done (or could do) that can be called Qualitive research?
(Qualitive research-a set of research techniques in which data is obtained from a relatively small group respondents and not analyzed with statistical techniques. 2). opinions and ideas.)
1). vox pox: which insisted upon us getting information for our music video through opinions rather than getting bias statistical facts. Opinions are rather important in order to get the best ideas for our music video production. Without opinions we would have no idea what are target audience are after or which they'll rather prefer.
2). Questionnaires which insisted upon 20 mutiple questions which helped us to get first hand opinions and ideas, to see what we should include in our music video content.
Q5). What research have you done (or could do) that can be called Quantitave research?
(Quantitative research-the collection (statistically) large samples of quantitave data and usually some form statistical analysis. Quantitative research is often used to sustantiate the findings of qualitative research. 2). Numbers and tables.)
1). when collecting answers from the questionnaires we took a question at random from the questionnaire and using the correct programme we was able to create simple pie-charts in order to be able to show how we conducted our research (also for presentational devices).
